Paper Tower!

Materials Required: Paper and tape

Goal: To practice the design process, including planning, predicting performance, and teamwork to achieve the same goal.

Description: You will be building a paper tower using only the materials you are given.  The group with the best performance wins the contest.

The performance is weighted based on the following items:
  • number of sheets of paper used
  • height of the tower
  • time it takes to construct

However, before you are allowed to begin construction, you must plan what you are going to do and estimate your performance.  After a predefined amount of time, all construction must stop. Your performance will be measured using the following tool:

Performance Score = 10H - 67N - Z(T - 300)
  • H is the height of the tower in inches
  • N is the number of sheets of paper used
  • T is the construction time in seconds
  • Z is a weighting factor.
